China has expressed a willingness to continue trade negotiations with the U.S. following promising discussions in Geneva, according to a commentary published in the People’s Daily on Tuesday. The article, a reflection of the Chinese Communist Party’s stance, praised recent steps toward tariff reductions between the two countries.
The commentary called the Geneva talks a “great start” for future negotiations, aiming to address trade and economic imbalances. It emphasized that while challenges remain, China is ready to build on this progress with the U.S. to lay a strong foundation for high-level economic and trade talks.
The article also welcomed the U.S. decision to reduce tariffs on China from 145% to 30%, while China reciprocated by lowering its own tariffs on U.S. goods from 125% to 10%. Despite these reductions, the tariffs remain historically high, leaving room for further discussions.
According to the commentary, a balanced and healthy trade relationship would benefit both nations and support global economic growth. However, it also urged the U.S. to correct its practices of imposing unilateral tariff hikes and collaborate with China to create mutually beneficial policies.
