Amazon announced a $20 billion investment to build multiple data center campuses in Pennsylvania. The project aims to expand the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing infrastructure.
Salem Township in Luzerne County and Falls Township in Bucks County are the leading candidates for the new campuses, with other communities also being considered.
This investment marks the largest private sector capital investment in Pennsylvania’s history. It is expected to create at least 1,250 high-paying, high-tech jobs, including roles such as data center engineers, network specialists, and security experts. Thousands of additional construction and supply chain jobs will also be supported.
Governor Josh Shapiro praised the deal, saying it will generate new revenue for local communities and secure Pennsylvania’s place in the global AI race. He highlighted the state’s strong energy resources, tech universities, and economic development plans as key advantages.
Amazon will also partner with local schools and workforce groups to offer training programs. These include data center technician courses, fiber optic workshops, and STEM education for K-12 students. The company launched a $250,000 fund to support grants for STEM, sustainability, digital skills, and health initiatives in Pennsylvania communities.
David Zapolsky, Amazon’s chief global affairs and legal officer, said the investment reflects Amazon’s commitment to advancing AI innovation and creating lasting economic benefits for the state.
This announcement follows Amazon’s recent $10 billion AI infrastructure investment in North Carolina and reflects a broader trend among tech giants expanding AI capabilities. Other companies like Meta, OpenAI, and Nvidia are also investing heavily in AI data centers and technology development.
