President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” in Congress goes beyond tax breaks and spending cuts. It also plans to fund a large-scale deportation effort.
Republican leaders used protests in Los Angeles against Trump’s immigration raids to push for quick approval of the bill, which is over 1,000 pages long.
House Speaker Mike Johnson said the bill, called the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, would add 10,000 new Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. It would also provide $45 billion to expand migrant detention centers and fund at least 1 million deportations each year.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune pointed to the protests in Los Angeles as proof that law enforcement needs strong support. The bill includes about $350 billion for national security.
Trump wants it passed by the Fourth of July. However, Senate Republicans face opposition from Democrats and some within their own party over the bill’s details.
Meanwhile, Democrats warn that Trump’s use of the National Guard and Marines in California, despite the governor’s objections, is making tensions worse. What started as local protests in Los Angeles could spread to other cities if the president continues with aggressive immigration enforcement tactics.
