India has announced plans to impose import duties on certain U.S. products, aimed at countering Washington’s tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from India, according to a notice to the World Trade Organization (WTO).
In the notice, dated Monday, India stated that the new tariffs would apply to selected U.S. products, effectively suspending some trade concessions.
These proposed measures come after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed broad tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, continuing from similar actions taken in 2018.
India, which is the second-largest producer of crude steel globally, informed the WTO that the U.S. tariffs would impact $7.6 billion worth of Indian-made products exported to the United States.
This move by India comes as both nations prepare to finalize a trade deal, in which India has agreed to reduce the tariff gap by two-thirds.
