Amazon announced a $10 billion investment to build a new campus in Richmond County, North Carolina. The project will expand the company’s cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. This move aims to revitalize a region that lost many textile and apparel jobs decades ago.
The investment is expected to create at least 500 high-skilled jobs. These roles will include engineers, network specialists, security experts, and other technical positions.
Thousands more jobs will be supported through construction and the data center supply chain. Amazon also plans to partner with local universities and community colleges to train workers for these roles.
Governor Josh Stein called the investment one of the largest in North Carolina’s history. He said it will bring hundreds of well-paying jobs and boost Richmond County’s economy. The county, located on the South Carolina border with about 42,000 residents, will see major upgrades to its water, wastewater, and fiber optic systems at no cost to taxpayers.
Amazon’s chief global affairs and legal officer, David Zapolsky, said the investment will position North Carolina as a hub for advanced technology. He emphasized the company’s commitment to working with local leaders, suppliers, and educational institutions to develop future talent.
North Carolina already hosts data centers from major tech companies like Apple. Amazon has invested $12 billion in the state since 2010 and supports 24,000 jobs there. The new campus will house servers, storage drives, networking gear, and other technology to power AI and cloud services.
This investment reflects Amazon’s broader strategy to expand its AI capabilities amid growing competition from Google, Microsoft, and others. The company recently announced a similar $11 billion investment in Georgia to support AI and cloud infrastructure.
