Amazon has announced job cuts in its Books division, affecting fewer than 100 employees. The layoffs include staff at the Goodreads review site and Kindle units. The company said the move aims to improve efficiency and better align with its business goals.
An Amazon spokesperson said, “As part of our ongoing efforts to make our teams operate more efficiently and align with our business roadmap, we made the difficult decision to eliminate a small number of roles within the Books organization.”
This is part of a broader trend at Amazon, which has recently reduced headcount in its devices and services unit, the Wondery podcast division, and corporate communications teams. CEO Andy Jassy is leading efforts to cut excess bureaucracy, including reducing layers of management.
Despite these cuts, Amazon added about 4,000 jobs in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the previous quarter. On Thursday, Amazon’s shares closed up 0.3%, though they have fallen 5.6% year-to-date.
The job cuts in the Books division were first reported by Business Insider and reflect Amazon’s ongoing strategy to streamline operations while adapting to changing market conditions.
